Best Business Apps For Your iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch

There’s no shortage of impressive applications— some of them free—for Apple’s popular family of mobile devices, and many of them are perfect for the home office worker or entrepreneur. Here are our favorite business apps for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. (Unless otherwise indicated, see the Apple App Store to purchase these.)

Business Card Reader - Best iPad and iPhone App for Reading Business Cards

Business Card Reader ($4.99) . . . well, reads business cards. No big deal, these days, but this recently updated app does it very quickly, very easily, and very well. Use your camera-equipped Apple mobile device to quickly and almost flawlessly import contact information from a business card directly to your address book. (And you’ll find that it’s easy to edit the scanned data, on the rare occasions that proves necessary.)
The app is integrated with LinkedIn, so maneuvering between the two is easy. Mobile workers will discover that the text scanning is fast and eerily accurate, recognizing business cards printed in many formats and in multiple languages, including English, French, German, and Spanish. Anyone who regularly networks and collects contact info will love this app. At $5, it’s a great investment that will quickly pay for itself.

FileXChange – Best iPad App for Managing and Transferring Files

FileXChange ($2.99) solves a problem that really shouldn’t have been a problem in the first place: Apple—which usually creates beautifully engineered and easy to use products—has made the process of moving files from your PC to your iPad (or vice versa) remarkably clunky. On the plus side, several other companies have stepped forward with apps that help you get around the problem, and FileXChange is a great example of that entrepreneurial spirit. Essentially a simple file manager, you can use the app to quickly and easily move files back and forth between the iPad and any number of devices—including other iOS 4 devices. The app can open most file types, including images, movies, PDFs, and Microsoft Office docs.
Just download the iPad app, click the Wi-Fi icon, and enter an IP address in your browser to establish a connection between your PC and your iPad. Simple. Convenient.
So why didn’t Apple think of it?

Skype – Best iPhone and iPad App to Make Video Calls

The long-awaited Skype for iPad (free) is here. Now you can call, video call (with camera-equipped devices), and instant message anyone else with Skype for your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. Call and IM other Skype users free, or call or IM nonusers at low national or international rates using a 3G or Wi-Fi connection.
Skype now offers near CD quality sound for Skype-to-Skype calls on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad, and 2nd and 3rd generation iPod touch. With the increasing prevalence of camera-equipped Apple devices, Skype-based family video chats have become common, but Skype is also being used more and more often in business environments. Business users who wish to videoconference can initiate and share a video call with three or more people anywhere in the world with Skype Premium ($107.88 per year).
