Apple's iPhone and iPod touch revolutionised handheld
gaming, and new titles designed specifically for the iPad 2 are appearing every
day. With its bigger screen, the device can transform your favourite iOS games,
whether you're solving puzzles, fighting in space or treading in your sporting
hero's footsteps. And with the iPad 2's easy-to-use interface and a wealth of
fun and educational games on the App Store, the whole family can join in the
experience.
Ratz (Free)
The premise of Ratz is pretty simple. Rats swarm the screen
trying to gobble up your cheese, and your task is to send them back to their
dingy dwellings with a swipe of your finger It sounds straightforward enough,
but once your screen is swarming with the filthy rodents you soon become
overrun. Things get even more complicated when progressive levels introduce
more elements - you're soon required to fling the rats precisely into snooker
pockets to get rid of them, and then black rats can only be destroyed by firing
them at cats. Which is, of course, exactly true to real life.
Ratz has a simple gameplay dynamic, and makes good use of
the touchscreen, so it's ideal for children. However, we found our
four-year-old tester soon became frustrated and lacked the hand and eye
co-ordination necessary to keep up with the pace.
It's fast and frantic fun, but perhaps an easier mode for
young children would have been an advisable extra.
Verdict:
A simple idea that's perfect for kids, but it's often a bit
too difficult for them
Scrabble for iPad ($3.99)
It's great to see EA's interpretation of the most famous
example of that genre working so nicely on the iPad Everything behaves as you'd
expect in Scrabble for iPad, which has a perfect drag-based interface (in both
landscape and portrait modes), and options for solo games and battles with
computer opponents. Scrabble for iPad also introduces a Party Play mode, where
you can use the iPad as the board and an iPhone or iPod touch (using the free
"Tile Rack app and a Bluetooth connection) as your tile rack - thereby
creating the most ludicrously expensive Scrabble set in history.
Verdict:
Scrabble on the iPad - a hit for fans of the board game and
those new to it
What's first apparent about this game is that it's one of
the cheeky titles that claims to be free, only to dash your hopes by soon
pointing you to an In-App Purchase of .99.That gripe aside, the adventure is
pretty stunning, and more playable than many similar titles. Interesting
puzzles await, and it's certainly no walk in the park to complete.
Verdict:
Free to try but you'll soon be pestered for an in-app
upgrade
